Doctors initially diagnosed SBS/AHT; after a 10‑hour interrogation police extracted a confession by falsely telling Thomas his son might live if he explained an ‘accident.’ New experts later showed Matthew died of pneumococcal pneumonia with sepsis, not trauma; conviction vacated when confession deemed coerced, and he was acquitted at retrial in 2014.
